Toor dal recipe | Simple paruppu is a simple and quick dish that is typically served in South India with hot rice. Simple toor dal recipe is also prepared with a few vegetables but without the tamarind-like ingredients required to make sambar. However, I omitted vegetables in this delicious meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Toor dal
- 1 Onion
- 2 Green Chilli
- 1 Tomato
- 4-5 Garlic cloves
- 1/4 tsp Chilli Powder
- a pinch Turmeric Powder
- Few drops Castor oil
- a small piece asafetida
- Few Curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1-2 Red chilli
- Ghee / Oil
- Few Coriander leaves
Directions
- Wash and soak toor dal for 10 mins.
- Meanwhile, peel and chop onions, garlic, tomato and slit green chilli.
- Cook toor dal with 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, castor oil and asafetida.
- When it’s half cooked add chopped onion, green chilli, tomato, garlic, chilli powder and water as required.
- Add salt, simmer the mixture until it becomes soft, and then thoroughly mash it.
- Heat oil / Ghee in a pan, temper with cumin seeds, red chilli, curry leaves, saute a minute in low flame and pour it on top of cooked dal.
- Simple Toor dal is ready, garnished with coriander leaves.
- Serve it with hot rice, ghee, any porial and papad.
