Sambar Rice | Sambhar Sadam Recipe | Salem Sanna Sambar rice with veggies and toor dal is a simple dish to prepare. I used the traditional rice of Tamil Nadu, known as Salem Sanna, but you can use whatever rice you like with any sambar veggie of your choosing. The addition of roasted and ground masala gives the dish a pleasant aroma and flavour.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Salem Sanna Rice
- 1/2 Cup Toor dal
- 1/2 Cup Mixed Vegetables (Drumstick, Brinjal, Carrot, Beans)
- 1-2 Tomato
- 1 tbsp Sambar Powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- Amla Size Tamarind
- 10 Shallot / Small onions
- 1/4 tsp Mustard
- 1/4 tsp Urad dal
- 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
- Few Curry leaves
- 1-2 Red Chilli
- Few Coriander Leaves
- Oil
- Ghee
- Salt
To Roast & Grind
- 1 tbsp Coriander Seeds
- 4-6 Red Chilli
- 1 tbsp Chana Dal
- 1 tbsp Urad dal
- 1/4 Fenugreek Seeds
- 1/4 tsp Asafoetida
- 2 tbsp Grated Coconut
Directions
- Combine Salem Sanna rice and Toor dal, wash and soak it for 20 mins.
- Meanwhile, roast and grind the ingredients given under the ‘To roast & grind’ table.
- Chop vegetables and keep them ready.
- Cook Rice and Toor dal till soft and mushy with 6 cups of water.
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard, wait till it splutters, then add urad dal, cumin seeds, red chilli, curry leaves, asafetida, chopped shallots.
- Saute until onions get translucent, then add vegetables, tomato and saute till they get half cooked in low flame.
- Then add sambar powder, turmeric powder, ground masala, salt and just stir.
- Add tamarind extract water with one cup of water and cook till everything gets cooked well and it gets a little thick.
- Now, add this sambar to the cooked, mashed rice and mix all well with a spoon of ghee.
- Garnish with coriander leaves.
- Delicious Sambar Rice is Ready.
- Serve hot with papad, poriyal.
