Aval Upma Recipe | Poha Upma is an easy and quick meal prepared with Rice flakes, often known as flattened rice. There are thick and thin rice flakes available in the market; nevertheless, it is always preferable to utilise thick flakes. The traditional red rice flakes can also be used in place of one of the traditional rice white flakes in this recipe. Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Aval / Poha / Flakes
  • 5-7 Shallot / Small Onion
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1 Green Chilli
  • 1/4 tsp Chilli powder
  • a pinch turmeric powder
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 1/4 Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Urad dal
  • Oil
  • Salt

Directions

  1. Quick rinse the aval for two times, drain the water (if you are using thick aval then soak with 1/4 Cup of water for 15 mins) and keep it aside.
  2. Chop onions, tomato and slit green chilli.
  3. Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, add urad dal and wait till it turns golden.
  4. Then add onion, curry leaves, green chilli and saute for a while till onions get translucent.
  5. Add tomato, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and saute till it gets soft.
  6. Once done, add washed / soaked aval, give a stir for a minute or two.
  7. Switch off the stove.
