Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Barnyard Millet
  • 1/4 Cup Green Peas
  • 1/4 tsp Chilli powder
  • a pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 2 Cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon
  • 1 Bayleaf
  • 1 tbsp Pepper Powder
  • Oil
  • Salt

To grind

  • 2-4 Green Chilli
  • 1 Onion
  • 1/2 Cup Fresh Mint leaves
  • 1 Small Piece Ginger
  • 5-6 Garlic
  • 1 tsp Fennel Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp PoppySeeds

Directions

  1. Wash Barnyard Millet / Kuthiraivali Rice and soak it in water for 20 mins.
  2. Grind all the ingredients given under to grind to a fine paste.
  3. In a mud pot / Heavy bottom pot heat oil, add cloves, cinnamon, bay leaf and wait till they sizzle.
  4. Then add green peas and stir.
  5. Add ground paste, chilli powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder and saute for a while till the raw smell disappears.
  6. Then add soaked, drained millets and give a stir.
  7. Add Salt with 2 Cups of water.
  8. Give a stir and let it boil.
  9. When it starts to boil, reduce the flame to medium and continue cooking with half closed lid.
  10. Switch off the stove once water is absorbed and millets gets cooked well, which takes 7 to 9 mins.
  11. Close it with a lid and keep it aside.
  12. After 15 mins open it and gently fluff Barnyard Millet Mint Brinji.
  13. Aromatic, Tasty and Healthy Kuthiraivali / Barnyard Millet Pudina Brinji is Ready.
  14. Serve hot with any raita or papad.
