Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Raw rice
  • 4 tbsp Toor dal
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 Urad dal
  • a pinch asafoetida
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 2 Red Chilli
  • 1/4 cup Grated coconut
  • Oil
  • Salt

Directions

  1. Wash and soak rice and toor dal for 1 hour separately.
  2. Then coarsely grind them separately and keep it ready.
  3. Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds, then add urad dal, red chilli, curry leaves, asafetida.
  4. Then add coarsely ground toor dal and saute for a while.
  5. Add rice and continue stirring, then add 2 1/2 cups of water and salt with it.
  6. Mix well and let it boil.
  7. Keep stirring till the water gets absorbed completely and till we get upma like consistency.
  8. Add grated coconut, mix all well, switch off the stove.
  9. Let it get warm to make small balls.
  10. Boil water in the idli steamer, make small balls little elongated with the prepared mix and place it in the steamer.
  11. Cover and cook for 10-15 mins.
  12. Pidi Kozhukattai is ready.
  13. Serve hot with any chutney or sambar.
