Toor dal recipe | Simple paruppu is a simple and quick dish that is typically served in South India with hot rice. Simple toor dal recipe is also prepared with a few vegetables but without the tamarind-like ingredients required to make sambar. However, I omitted vegetables in this delicious meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toor dal
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Green Chilli
  • 1 Tomato
  • 4-5 Garlic cloves
  • 1/4 tsp Chilli Powder
  • a pinch Turmeric Powder
  • Few drops Castor oil
  • a small piece asafetida
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1-2 Red chilli
  • Ghee / Oil
  • Few Coriander leaves

Directions

  1. Wash and soak toor dal for 10 mins.
  2. Meanwhile, peel and chop onions, garlic, tomato and slit green chilli.
  3. Cook toor dal with 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, castor oil and asafetida.
  4. When it’s half cooked add chopped onion, green chilli, tomato, garlic, chilli powder and water as required.
  5. Add salt, simmer the mixture until it becomes soft, and then thoroughly mash it.
  6. Heat oil / Ghee in a pan, temper with cumin seeds, red chilli, curry leaves, saute a minute in low flame and pour it on top of cooked dal.
  7. Simple Toor dal is ready, garnished with coriander leaves.
  8. Serve it with hot rice, ghee, any porial and papad.
